WHAT GEAR TO BRING TO A SHARON TENENBAUM WORKSHOP?
LENSES: Ideally you want at least two lenses, a wide-angle (anything less than 24mm), and a mid-range lens 24-70 mm. Any lens on top of that is bonus (on a budget, a mid-range lens can suffice). If you are into abstracts, then a zoom lens can come in handy. However, please note that with zoom lenses there is a big difference between the fast version and the slower (apertures). We are photographing buildings, hopefully, they are not moving fast or at all! so no need to get the heavier, pricier version of a zoom lens if you don’t plan on using it for sports or portraits.
CAMERA: Please do not bring a new camera as like with anything new, it isn’t always familiar and a workshop is not the place to start learning the ins and outs of a new device. Instead, please bring a camera you know how to use. If you wish to shoot long exposures, then please be sure that your camera has bulb mode.
FILTERS: ND filters (for slow shutter shots or long exposures). Look under Gear and Filters Blog for which filters to get.
TRIPOD: As for the tripod, I would not recommend bringing your heavy-duty ‘hurricane-resistant’ tripod. Everything you bring, you will be lugging with you all day long. The ultra-light travel tripods are not on my favorite list either if they are too flimsy. Anything mid-range will be just fine. Please bring a tripod that is sturdy enough, but light enough so you can carry it with you all day (about 15k steps a day).
OTHER: Remote shutter release.
A NOTE ABOUT WALKING: Sharon’s workshops are not adventure hiking safaris that require trekking all day with your gear, they take place in urban environments. having said that, we walk a fair bit and people that are not used to it, feel their feet hurt by Day two or even Day One. In our workshops, we cab or Uber to destinations, yet walking is an integral part of the commute. If you are not a walker, I recommend (no joke) training by walking with your camera gear for at least 10,000 steps on pavement. I promise that if you do, you will thank me later 😊.
